Common questions
How many U.S. visas are issued each month?
The U.S. Department of State publishes monthly reports of nonimmigrant visas issued, by nationality and visa class and by embassy or post. This site turns those reports into charts and tables: pick a country, a visa type or an embassy to see how many visas were issued and how that changed from last month and from a year earlier.
Do these numbers show how many visas are approved or refused?
No. They count visas issued. They are not approval rates, and they do not include refusals. Monthly figures are preliminary and can be revised.
How long is the wait for a U.S. visa interview?
It depends on the embassy and the visa type. The State Department publishes the next available appointment and the average wait last month for each embassy, updated monthly. Look up your embassy on the appointment wait times page. These figures are estimates, not a guarantee of an appointment.
What is the Visa Bulletin?
The Visa Bulletin is a monthly State Department publication that shows which priority dates are being processed for family and employment green card categories. Find your category and country column: if your priority date is earlier than the date shown, or the category is Current, your turn has come.
Where does the data come from?
All numbers come from the U.S. Department of State: the monthly nonimmigrant visa issuance reports, the global visa wait times page and the Visa Bulletin. The site only reorganizes them for easier reading.
Is this an official government website?
No. Visa Status is an unofficial, independent site. It is not affiliated with the U.S. government and does not give legal or immigration advice. Always check the State Department and your embassy for your own case.
