Visitor – business or tourism
How long does a B1/B2 visa take?
The interview wait is about 1 month in the middle across 187 embassies (State Department update of 5 Oct 2026). It ranges from Under 15 days to 21 months.
The steps
- Pick the visa type and fill in the online application (Form DS-160).
- Pay the visa application fee.
- Book your interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate. This is the step that has a wait.
- Go to the interview with your documents and answer the officer's questions.
- If approved, your passport with the visa comes back to you. Some cases need extra checks (called administrative processing), which can add weeks or more.

We update interview appointment wait time information monthly. Average wait times do not guarantee the availability of an appointment.
Official data from: U.S. Department of State, Global Visa Wait Times (updated 5 Oct 2026)
“Next available appointment” is when a new applicant could expect a slot; “Average wait” is how long people waited last month, from paying the fee to the interview. The State Department gives “Average wait” for visitor visas (B1/B2) only where the next appointment is more than three months away. “NA” means no figure is given. “Under 15 days” is what they print as “< 0.5 Month”. Months are counted as 30 days. These are estimates, not promises: embassies release new slots often, so check the embassy's own website. Unofficial site.
B1/B2 timing in short
How long does it take to get a B1/B2 visa?
The part we can measure is the wait for the interview: about 1 month in the middle across 187 embassies for Visitors (B1/B2), from Under 15 days (Ashgabat) to 21 months (Sydney). Before that you need to prepare your application, and after it some cases take extra time for checks. Dates change every day.
Does the B1/B2 wait depend on the embassy?
Yes. Each embassy has its own wait. Many visas must be applied for where you live or hold citizenship, so check your embassy's rules before choosing another one.
