The short answer
B-1 is for short business visits such as meetings, conferences and negotiating contracts. B-2 is for tourism, visiting family and friends, and medical treatment. Most people get one combined B-1/B-2 visa.
What to know
- You cannot work for a U.S. employer or be paid from a U.S. source on a B visa.
- You cannot enroll in a degree course on a B visa.
- The visa is for a temporary stay. The officer at the border decides how long you may stay.
- Choose B-1 or B-2 by what you will do, and the officer will place the right one.
