The short answer
An invitation letter is not required, but it can help explain a visit to family or friends. It does not guarantee the visa, and the officer still decides based on you, not the host.
What to know
- The host can write: your name and relationship, dates and purpose of the visit, where you will stay and who pays.
- The host may add a copy of their ID or immigration status.
- Keep it short, true and consistent with your DS-160 and your answers.
- The letter does not replace your own proof of ties to home.
