The short answer
Form I-485 is the application to become a permanent resident from inside the U.S. You file it with USCIS together with proof of your category, a medical exam, photos, identity papers and the filing fee, once a visa number is available for you.
What to know
- You must be eligible in your category, and a visa number must be available (current in the Visa Bulletin), unless you are an immediate relative.
- Typical papers: birth certificate, passport copies, entry record (I-94), approved or pending petition, medical exam (I-693), and for family cases an affidavit of support (I-864).
- You may be called for fingerprints and an interview.
- Answer every question honestly. Wrong answers can cause a denial.
