The short answer
A permanent resident can petition for a spouse in the F2A family category. Unlike citizens' spouses, there is a waiting line, shown in the Visa Bulletin. You usually apply once your date is current.
What to know
- Form I-130 filed by the permanent resident.
- Your priority date is the filing date of the petition.
- Check the Visa Bulletin for F2A. Sometimes there is a Dates for Filing chart that lets you start earlier.
- Becoming a citizen can move your spouse to the faster immediate-relative category.
