The short answer
Only a U.S. citizen who is at least 21 can petition for a parent. Parents of citizens are immediate relatives, so there is no waiting line, though processing still takes time. Permanent residents cannot sponsor parents.
What to know
- The citizen files Form I-130 for each parent and proves the relationship with a birth certificate.
- The citizen also signs an affidavit of support.
- Parents in the U.S. may adjust status, and parents abroad apply at an embassy.
- The usual rules about admissibility and medical exams apply.
