The short answer
The I-864 is a promise by a sponsor to support the immigrant. The sponsor must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who lives in the U.S., is at least 18, and has income of at least 125% of the federal poverty guideline for the household size, or finds a joint sponsor.
What to know
- The sponsor shows recent tax returns, proof of income and, if needed, assets.
- A joint sponsor can help if the main sponsor's income is too low.
- It is a legal contract and can last until the immigrant becomes a citizen or earns enough work credits.
- Military sponsors have a lower income level.
