The short answer
To stay longer you usually file Form I-539 with USCIS before your authorized stay ends, and show a good reason. Approval is not guaranteed, so file early and do not stay past your date without permission.
What to know
- Your authorized stay date is on your I-94 record, not on the visa itself.
- File before the date runs out and explain why you need more time.
- Staying after your authorized date (overstaying) can lead to problems getting visas later.
- Some people choose to leave and re-enter instead. Talk to a qualified adviser for your case.
