The short answer
While your green card application (Form I-485) is pending, you can apply for a work permit (EAD) on Form I-765. You may file it with the I-485 or later. You can work only once you have the card.
What to know
- Apply on Form I-765, often at the same time as the I-485.
- Some people can keep working on their current work visa, such as H-1B, instead.
- A work permit does not give permission to travel. See advance parole.
- Check the current rules and fees with USCIS.
For the exact rules, forms and fees, see USCIS.
