The short answer
Advance parole is a travel document for people with a pending green card application. If you leave the U.S. without it while your application is pending, you may be treated as having given up your application, with some exceptions such as certain visa holders.
What to know
- You apply on Form I-131 and wait for approval before you travel.
- It does not guarantee you will be let back in. The border officer decides.
- Some people, such as H-1B and L-1 holders, may travel on their visa instead. Ask a qualified adviser before you go.
- Check your case for any past unlawful stay, which can create extra risks.
