The short answer
A green card is valid for ten years. To renew it, or to replace one that is lost, stolen or damaged, you file Form I-90 with USCIS. You can file within six months before it expires.
What to know
- Your status as a permanent resident does not end when the card expires, but you need a valid card to prove it and to travel.
- You may be called for fingerprints.
- Your receipt notice can be used as temporary proof in some cases.
- If your card was lost abroad, ask about a boarding foil or a returning resident visa.
