The short answer
To renew an F-1 visa you apply again in the usual way. You also need a valid I-20 with a recent travel signature from your school, proof you are still studying or on authorized work, and proof of funds.
What to know
- A visa stamp can expire while you are still in status in the U.S. You only need a new one to re-enter.
- Ask your DSO to sign the I-20 for travel before you leave.
- Bring proof of your current program and funds.
- Check the embassy's current rules about renewals and interview waivers.
