The short answer
For most temporary visas the steps are the same: choose your visa type, complete the online DS-160 form, pay the visa fee, book an interview, go to the interview with your documents, then wait for the decision.
What to know
- 1. Pick the visa type that matches your purpose.
- 2. Complete the online application (DS-160) and keep the confirmation page.
- 3. Pay the visa application fee and keep the receipt.
- 4. Book your interview (and a fingerprint visit, where required) at the embassy or consulate.
- 5. Go to the interview with your passport, DS-160 confirmation, fee receipt, appointment letter and supporting papers.
- 6. If approved, your passport comes back with the visa. Some cases need extra checks first.
- Some visas need an approved petition or school form before step 2.
