The short answer
Each visa has its own rules, but every applicant must have a valid passport, fit the purpose of the visa, and not be barred from entering. For temporary visas the officer must also believe you will leave when your stay ends.
What to know
- A valid passport and a clear reason for the trip that fits one visa type.
- For most temporary visas: proof of strong ties to your home country, so you will return.
- Some visas need a sponsor or approval first: a school (F-1), an employer petition (H-1B, L-1, O-1), or a petition from a relative (K-1, family visas).
- You must not be inadmissible: for example, certain health, criminal, security or past immigration problems can block a visa.
- You can ask for a waiver in some cases of inadmissibility.
