The short answer
There are two waits: the wait for an interview appointment, which differs by embassy and visa type, and what happens after the interview, which is often quick but can take longer if extra checks are needed. Nobody can promise an exact time.
What to know
- The State Department publishes the interview wait for each embassy every month. This site shows them with trend arrows.
- After the interview, many approved visas are returned within days, but extra checks (administrative processing) can add weeks or more.
- Immigrant visas and green cards take much longer, because of the line (priority dates) and the paperwork.
- Apply early, and check your embassy's website for the latest appointment dates.
