The short answer
There are two big groups: nonimmigrant visas for a temporary stay, and immigrant visas for living in the U.S. permanently. Inside each group the visa type depends on why you are going.
What to know
- Visiting for tourism, family or short business: B-1/B-2.
- Studying: F-1 (academic), M-1 (vocational), J-1 (exchange programs).
- Working: H-1B (jobs that need a degree), L-1 (company transfer), O-1 (extraordinary ability), E-2 (investors), TN (Canada and Mexico), H-2A and H-2B (seasonal).
- Joining a fiancé(e): K-1. Living permanently: an immigrant visa or a green card.
- Each visa has its own rules, so start with the purpose of your trip.
