The short answer
CPT is work that is part of your course, approved by your school during your studies. OPT is work experience in your field, approved by USCIS with a work permit card, usually after you finish.
What to know
- CPT: approved by the school's DSO, tied to one employer and dates, no USCIS card.
- OPT: needs a USCIS application and a work permit card, and is not tied to one employer.
- Too much full-time CPT can reduce or remove OPT. Check with your DSO.
- OPT is limited to about 12 months per degree level, plus a 24-month extension for some STEM fields.
