The short answer
OPT lets F-1 students work in the U.S. in a job related to their field of study, usually for up to 12 months after finishing a degree. You must be in good F-1 status and have studied full time for at least one academic year.
What to know
- You must be in valid F-1 status and have completed at least one full academic year in a degree program.
- Your job must relate to your major.
- You can use OPT before graduation (limited) or after graduation.
- Each education level generally gets its own 12 months.
- It needs a recommendation from your DSO and a work permit card.
