The short answer
You can usually travel on OPT if you have a valid F-1 visa, an I-20 with a recent travel signature, your work permit card and proof of a job or a job offer. Travel before your work permit arrives can be risky.
What to know
- Valid passport and F-1 visa stamp. If it expired, you must get a new one abroad.
- I-20 signed by your DSO for travel, usually within the last six months while on OPT.
- Your work permit card, and proof of employment such as an employer letter.
- If you leave while your OPT application is pending, you may have trouble returning to work.
- Talk to your DSO before you book a trip.
