The short answer
CPT lets F-1 students work off campus when the work is an integral part of their course, such as an internship or co-op. Most students must complete one academic year first, and the DSO approves it on the I-20.
What to know
- The job must be part of the curriculum and related to your studies.
- It is approved by your DSO and written on your I-20. It is only for that employer and those dates.
- Many students must finish one full academic year first. Some graduate programs allow it sooner.
- Using a year or more of full-time CPT can make you ineligible for OPT, so ask first.
