The short answer
F-1 students can usually work on campus up to 20 hours a week while school is in session. Work off campus needs special permission, such as CPT, OPT or in rare cases a hardship approval. Unauthorized work can end your status.
What to know
- On campus: usually up to 20 hours a week during the term, more during official breaks.
- Off campus: only with authorization, for example CPT (during studies) or OPT (usually after or during studies).
- Always ask your DSO before you accept any job or internship.
- The work must follow the rules about hours, employer and the type of work.
