The short answer
F-2 is for the spouse and unmarried children under 21 of an F-1 student. F-2 holders can live in the U.S. but generally cannot work, and have limited study rights.
What to know
- The student must be in valid F-1 status, and you show your relationship with marriage or birth certificates.
- The student's I-20 lists the dependents.
- F-2 spouses generally may not work. Children may attend school up to high school level.
- Spouses can take only limited part-time or recreational classes. To study full time they would need to change to F-1 or another status.
