The short answer
Students with a degree in an eligible STEM field may apply for a 24-month extension of OPT. Your employer must use E-Verify, and you and the employer complete a training plan, Form I-983.
What to know
- Your degree must be on the government's STEM list.
- You apply while your first OPT is still valid, before it ends.
- Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify and agree to a training plan.
- Your DSO recommends the extension and updates your I-20.
- Unemployment limits and reporting rules still apply.
