The short answer
Use the State Department's online status check (called CEAC) with your application ID, which is on your DS-160 confirmation page. It tells you whether your case is in process, issued or refused.
What to know
- You need your DS-160 application ID or case number, your location and your passport number.
- “Administrative processing” means extra checks after the interview. It can take a while, and the embassy cannot always give an exact date.
- “Refused” on a 221(g) notice often means the officer needs more papers or time, not always a final no.
- Your embassy's website explains how it returns passports and when to contact them.
