The short answer
There is no official list. The officer asks short questions about your purpose, plans, money and ties to home. Answer honestly and briefly, and do not memorize a script.
What to know
- Expect questions like: Why are you going? How long will you stay? Who pays? What do you do here?
- Each visa type has its own themes: students are asked about the school and course, workers about the job, visitors about the trip.
- Bring papers but do not hand them over unless asked.
- If you do not understand a question, ask politely for it to be repeated.
For the exact rules, forms and fees, see the State Department visa website.
Visa Status is an unofficial site. This is general information in plain words, not legal advice. Rules, fees and forms change, so check the official website and your own papers. Written October 2026.
