The short answer
Some J-1 exchange visitors must return to their home country for two years before they can change to H or L status or get a green card. It applies if the program was government-funded, if your skill is on a government list, or for certain medical training.
What to know
- Your DS-2019 or visa may say if the rule applies to you. You can also ask for an advisory opinion from the State Department.
- It does not stop you from visiting the U.S. on other visas such as B.
- It can be waived in some cases (see the waiver question).
- Check before you plan a change to a work visa or a green card.
For the exact rules, forms and fees, see the State Department visa website.
