Visitor (B-1/B-2) visa interview checklist

Always bring

  • Passport (valid for the trip) and old passports
  • DS-160 confirmation page with the barcode
  • Interview appointment letter
  • Visa fee payment receipt
  • One passport photo, if your embassy asks for it

Shows your ties to home

  • Job letter or business papers
  • Proof of family, home or property at home
  • Past travel (stamps or visas) showing you came back

Shows the trip is paid for

  • Recent bank statements
  • Proof of who is paying, if not you
  • Trip plan: dates, places, return plan

Only if they apply

  • Invitation letter from the person you will visit
  • Medical letter and hospital papers (treatment trips)
  • Conference or meeting invitation (business)

Tips for the day

  • Be short and truthful. Answer only what you are asked.
  • Do not hand over papers unless the officer asks.
  • Never use false papers or hide an earlier refusal.
  • Arrive on time and follow the embassy's rules on phones and bags.
